Environmental Education Center

Education is paramount in the fight against improper disposal of waste. It motivates public to participate in recycling programmes, properly dispose of non-recyclable wastes, and to reduce consumption of non-biodegradable products. The Tibetan Welfare Office (TWO) creates flyers, posters, and banners on an ongoing basis, informing the public about local environmental issues and actions that can be taken on their part. Similarly, permanent metal signs in Hindi and Tibetan common through out Upper Dharamsala.

To meet the growing necessity for environmental education to be approached on a continuous basis and not just on occasions such as holidays and festivals, the TWO has set up an Environmental Education Center (EEC).

The main aim of the center is to educate everyone, from school children to tourists, about ecology and local environmental problems. The center has displays which illustrates a wide range of environmental problems and solutions. Displays explain the Clean Upper Dharamsala Project , as well as teaching universal responsibility, the conservation of air, water, soil, and how to minimize garbage. Tibet’s environment, human health, and ecology in general are also addressed.

The center is used for holding environmental forums and monthly environmental adult education sessions. Most importantly, TWO organizes daily environmental classes for school children in Upper Dharamsala during the summer and spring season. The SOIR-IM a Swedish organization has been supporting this center by sending a valuable educator every year in the month of September for three months.

Interested people meet every Wednesday 3pm in the EEC for a guided tour .
According to the interests of the weekly group we offer general information about the environmental situation in India, Tibet and Dharamsala, including presentations and documentaries. The group also decides if they would like a short tour through the recycled paper factory and bookbinding section, or whether they prefer a more detailed tour the next day including the segregation center and the daily business of the green workers.
